Aït Ben Haddou: what to know before you go

Aït Ben Haddou is a fortified village (ksar) on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Its earthen buildings cluster on a hillside above the Ounila River, and the site has been used as a backdrop for films from Gladiator to Game of Thrones. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed places in Morocco. A few families still live in the old ksar, though most have moved across the river to modern buildings.

Aït Ben Haddou — beyond the postcard

The ksar is commonly visited on routes between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, Dades or the Sahara. Visiting early or later in the day can make the experience more comfortable and atmospheric, while a local guide can add useful context about earthen construction, trade routes and the wider Drâa-Tafilalet landscape. It works especially well as a cultural stop inside a private Morocco road journey.
