Dades Valley & Gorge: what to know before you go

The Dades Valley runs between the High Atlas and the Sahara, carved by the Dades River through layers of red rock. The road winds past finger-like rock formations (the "Monkey Fingers"), kasbahs, and palm oases, narrowing to the Dades Gorge where the cliffs close in. It is one of the most scenic drives in Morocco and a natural overnight stop between Marrakech and Merzouga.

Getting to Dades Valley & Gorge

The Dades Valley cuts through the southern flank of the High Atlas and is known for dramatic red rock formations, oasis agriculture and the winding road through the Dades Gorge. The valley is not just a viewpoint: villages, orchards and small agricultural plots sit between dry mountain slopes, creating a strong contrast between cultivated and arid landscapes.

Dades is a natural overnight stop on the road between Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Todra and Merzouga. Walking options range from short valley walks to longer guided hikes, while road travellers can use the gorge and surrounding villages as a slower alternative to simply driving through. Spring and autumn usually offer comfortable conditions for walking.

Dades Valley & Gorge: history & heritage

The Dades Valley is part of the landscape between the High Atlas and the pre-Saharan valleys of the southeast. The wider Ouarzazate–Zagora–Tinghir region is promoted by Morocco's tourism office for its contrasts between desert landscapes and green valleys, with the Dades and other valleys forming important travel corridors through the southern interior.

The Dades Valley has a long history of oasis agriculture, Amazigh settlement and fortified earthen architecture. Kasbahs and ksour developed around water, farming and regional routes connecting the southern valleys with the High Atlas and Sahara.
