Todra Gorge: what to know before you go

The Todra Gorge is a canyon where the Todra River has carved a corridor through the limestone, with cliffs rising 300 m on either side. At its narrowest, the gorge is just 10 meters wide. The road through the gorge is one of the most dramatic in Morocco, and the area is a natural stop on the route between the Dades Valley and Merzouga.

Getting to Todra Gorge

Todra Gorge near Tinghir is one of southern Morocco’s most striking canyon landscapes, with high limestone walls rising above the river corridor. The lower gorge is accessible by road, while nearby paths and climbing areas allow visitors to explore beyond the main viewpoint. The surrounding oasis adds a greener layer to the otherwise rocky landscape.

Todra Gorge — beyond the postcard

Todra works particularly well for active travellers because it can be experienced at several levels: a short walk for road-trip guests, a longer hike through the surrounding valleys or a dedicated trekking itinerary. It is also a logical stop between Dades and Merzouga, helping break up the long journey across southeastern Morocco.

Todra Gorge: history & heritage

Todra Gorge is a dramatic canyon landscape near Tinghir in Morocco's southeast. It belongs to the wider pre-Saharan transition zone where cultivated oases and steep limestone valleys meet drier terrain. It is especially relevant to walking, canyon scenery and overland routes through the southern interior.

The Todra Valley developed around oasis agriculture and Amazigh settlements beside the Todra River. The dramatic gorge later became a landmark on southern Morocco travel routes, but the surrounding villages and irrigation landscapes are much older than modern tourism.
