Merzouga: what to know before you go

Merzouga is a small desert town on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a field of dunes that rises up to 150 m and stretches for 28 km along the Algerian border. It is the most accessible point for a Sahara desert experience in Morocco — reachable by road, with camel treks and desert camps operating from October to April. The dunes at sunrise and sunset are among the most iconic images of Morocco.

Getting to Merzouga

Merzouga is the best-known access point to the Erg Chebbi dunes in southeastern Morocco. The area is defined by a large field of golden sand dunes beside the village, with desert camps, camel excursions and 4x4 routes operating from the surrounding communities. The desert experience is usually built around sunset, an overnight camp and sunrise rather than a long-distance trek across the Sahara.

Merzouga — beyond the postcard

Merzouga is accessible by road and can be included in a private Marrakech–Sahara–Fes route, although the driving distances are substantial. Travelers should expect strong daytime sun, cooler nights outside summer and simple desert conditions even in luxury camps. The best itinerary balances the long road sections with stops in the High Atlas, Dades or Todra region and time in the desert itself.

Merzouga — beyond the postcard

Merzouga sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune region in southeastern Morocco. The wider Errachidia–Midelt–Merzouga area is presented by Morocco's national tourism office as a transition between Atlas landscapes and the desert. The area's travel character is shaped by dunes, oases and desert-edge settlements rather than by a single historic monument.

Merzouga: history & heritage

Merzouga sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune region in southeastern Morocco. The wider Errachidia–Midelt–Merzouga area is presented by Morocco's national tourism office as a transition between Atlas landscapes and the desert. The area's travel character is shaped by dunes, oases and desert-edge settlements rather than by a single historic monument.

The communities around Merzouga grew along Saharan trade and oasis networks linking southeastern Morocco with wider trans-Saharan routes. Today the Erg Chebbi dunes are the area's best-known landscape, but the region's history is also tied to oasis settlement, pastoral life and caravan culture.
