Getting to Rabat

Rabat is Morocco’s capital and one of its four imperial cities. The historic centre combines the Kasbah of the Udayas, the old medina, the Hassan Tower and the remains of Chellah with a modern administrative city. The result is a destination where royal, Andalusian, Islamic and contemporary Moroccan history can be explored within a relatively compact area.

Rabat — beyond the postcard

Rabat is often overlooked by travellers who rush between Marrakech and Fes, yet it makes an excellent cultural stop on a private northern or imperial-cities itinerary. A full day can cover the main historic sights, while an extra night gives more time for the medina, riverfront and museums without the pressure of a fast road journey.

Rabat: history & heritage

Rabat became a major Almohad site in the 12th century and later developed as an Alaouite and modern Moroccan political centre. It became the capital of Morocco in 1912, and the historic core, including the Kasbah of the Udayas and Hassan Tower area, reflects several layers of the city's past.
