Marrakech: what to know before you go

Marrakech is the starting point for most Morocco journeys. The medina is a labyrinth of souks, riads, and hidden courtyards, with Jemaa el-Fnaa square at its heart. Beyond the old city, the modern quarters (Gueliz, Hivernage) offer broader streets, galleries, and restaurants. Marrakech is also the practical hub for reaching the High Atlas (90 minutes), the Sahara (2 days by road), and the Atlantic coast (2.5 hours to Essaouira).

Getting to Marrakech

Marrakech is one of Morocco’s major historic cities and a natural starting point for private tours into the High Atlas and southern Morocco. The medina, Jemaa el-Fnaa, souks, Bahia Palace and Koutoubia area create a dense cultural core, while the newer districts offer restaurants, gardens and contemporary accommodation. Its position south of the High Atlas makes it especially useful for combining city time with mountain and desert journeys.

Marrakech — beyond the postcard

A good Marrakech stay does not need to be rushed. Two or three nights can allow time for the medina, architecture, food and neighbourhoods while leaving enough flexibility for a day trip to the Atlas or a longer private route towards Aït Ben Haddou and the Sahara. For SEO and planning purposes, Marrakech is also one of the most useful bases for travellers searching for private Morocco tours from Marrakech.

Marrakech: history & heritage

Marrakech is one of Morocco's historic imperial cities. The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes its heritage as nearly a thousand years old; the medina contains major landmarks including the Koutoubia and Jemaa el-Fna, while UNESCO lists the Medina of Marrakesh as World Heritage (1985).

Marrakech was founded by the Almoravids in 1070–1072 and became a major political, economic and cultural centre of the western Muslim world. The Almohads, Saadians and Alaouites later left major monuments, while the medina, Koutoubia and Jemaa el-Fna preserve layers of the city's history.
